INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH OLYMPIAD (IEO)
SOF is conducting the IEO Olympiad (International English Olympiad) exam every year by SOF to check out the students’ English language and grammar. Students will compete with each other at the International, National, State, or Regional level.
Benefits of IEO Olympiad Exam
- Improve the usage of English language and communication.
- Each student will receive the Student performance report.
IEO is generally a two-level exam
Level 1
Test is conducted in the respective schools of the participants during school hours.
- There are 35 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 4 and 50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 5 to class 12 of 60 minutes duration.
- The question paper consists of four sections:
- Section 1: Word & Structure Knowledge
- Section 2: Reading
- Section 3: Spoken & Written Expression
- Section 4: Achievers Section
- Separate question papers for each date of Exam.
- English is the Medium of the test.
- Test paper are prepared based on CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabus.
Level 2
Applicable for students of class 3 to class 12. The qualification criteria to reach to second round is as mentioned below:
- At International Level: Top 5% of candidates, class wise, who appear in the 1st level exam internationally.
- At Zone/State Level: Top 25 rank holders from each Zone and each class.
- At School Level: Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & scores at least 50% qualifying marks.
How to participate
Registration of Students
Student of class 1st to 12th can participate in the exam.
Any school can get themselves registered as a center for SOF IEO Level 1 and there is no fee for the institution to become a registered examination centre.

What is SOF IEO?
The SOF International English Olympiad (IEO) is an English language competition conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) for students from Classes 1 to 12. It helps students improve their grammar, vocabulary, reading, and communication skills while developing a strong command of the English language.
Who can participate in SOF IEO?
Any student studying in Class 1 to Class 12 can participate in the SOF IEO through their school. Schools register interested students, making it easy for them to appear for the exam.
What is the syllabus for SOF IEO?
The SOF IEO syllabus is based on the English curriculum followed by CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Boards. The exam mainly covers grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, word and structure knowledge, spoken and written expression, along with Logical Reasoning and an Achievers Section to test higher-order thinking skills.
Is there a Level 2 in SOF IEO?
Yes. Students from Classes 3 to 12 who perform well in Level 1 are eligible to appear for Level 2. Classes 1 and 2 have only Level 1 and do not have a second-level examination.
How are SOF IEO rankings decided?
SOF IEO rankings are based on the total marks scored by students in the exam. If two or more students score the same marks, SOF applies a tie-breaking process by comparing marks in important sections of the paper. This helps determine the final rankings fairly.
How can students improve vocabulary for SOF IEO?
Students can improve their vocabulary by reading English books, newspapers, and magazines regularly. Learning a few new words every day, understanding their meanings, and using them in sentences can make vocabulary stronger.
Are reading comprehension skills important?
Yes, reading comprehension is a very important part of the SOF IEO exam. Regular reading and practising comprehension passages help improve reading speed, understanding, and confidence in the exam.
