What is SOF?

SOF (Science Olympiad Foundation) is a non-profit educational organization based in India that conducts a variety of Olympiad examinations for school students from Classes 1 to 12. Its goal is to encourage students to develop strong conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills beyond the regular school curriculum.

For over 28 years, SOF has been nurturing young talent by encouraging scientific thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills through innovative assessments and technology-enabled learning. Its programs are supported by several prestigious organizations, including The British Council, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, the National University of Singapore, TCS, and The Institute of Company Secretaries of India.

Eligibility for SOF

Students studying in the eligible classes (Classes 1–12, depending on the Olympiad) at a recognized school can participate in SOF Olympiad exams. There is no minimum academic score required to appear for the Level 1 examination. Registration is generally done through the student’s school.

For Olympiads that include a Level 2, students qualify based on their Level 1 performance, such as securing a top rank at the school, zonal, or national level, as per SOF’s qualifying criteria. Students of Classes 1 and 2 are evaluated based on Level 1 only.

SOF Registration Details

Students can register for SOF Olympiad exams through their respective schools. Schools registered with SOF receive the registration forms and complete the enrollment of participating students. Schools that are not yet registered can apply to become an SOF examination centre at no cost. Registration is subject to the prescribed deadlines and applicable examination fee.

SOF Syllabus

The syllabus for SOF Olympiads is based on the current class curriculum prescribed by CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and major State Boards, ensuring relevance for students from different educational boards. For Level 1, the question paper generally comprises 60% questions from the current class syllabus and 40% from the previous class syllabus, while the Achievers Section is based entirely on the current class syllabus. Level 2 questions are drawn exclusively from the current class syllabus. Students can access the detailed, class-wise syllabus for each Olympiad on the official SOF website.

• Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
• Exam Duration: 60 minutes.
• Medium of Exam: English.
• Difficulty Level: Questions range from conceptual to application-based, testing analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Level 2 Exams: Conducted for selected Olympiads and eligible classes, featuring more advanced questions based on the current class syllabus.

SOF: Ranking and Results

Students will be awarded based on their School, Zonal and International ranks for the respective year. School principals and teachers will be felicitated based on performance of schools at International, Zonal and District level with cash awards, trophies, gifts and citations.
